Morton Meilgaard designed this beer flavor wheel in the 1970's. There are 14 categories broken down into 44 flavors. Beer has been found to have over 1000 identifiable flavors. An experienced taster can pick out maybe 100. It is now used as the standard reference by the European Brewery Convention, the American Society of Brewing Chemists, and the Master Brewers Association of the Americas.
